Child Development Technician

THE POSITION
Assists a teacher in a Child Development Center in conducting instructional activities, providing services to children newborn to fifth grade.

CURRENT OPENING: There are currently multiple part-time openings (10 months, 20 to 32.5 hours per week). Salary placement will be on Range 10 of the CSEA Salary Schedule “B.” Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($16.33 per hour) of this salary range.

Upon completion of the renewal, incumbents are required to maintain the Associate Teacher Permit. Fees related to obtaining and renewing the Associate Teacher Permit are at the employee’s expense.

In order to obtain the renewal of Associate Teacher Permit, incumbents have to be enrolled in an accredited institution leading to an Associate Degree or higher in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or related field. By the end of the ten year period, the incumbent must meet the requirements for the Child Development Teacher Permit. Requirements mandated by U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Office of Head Start.

Optional Second Language: Some positions in this classification require the ability to speak, read, and write a second language in addition to English, and may require bilingual proficiency for which selective certification may apply (Education Code 45277).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Plans and organizes materials for group activities.
Observes and documents activities and progress on student records.
Assists children with personal physical needs (e.g., toileting and diapering).
Supervises children in the absence of a teacher. Plans, prepares, and serves snacks or lunches.
Prepares instructional, display, bulletin boards, and work materials.
Performs various custodial activities such as sweeping, mopping, and cleaning of bathrooms, sinks, toilets, dishes, outside equipment and toys.
Lifts children for short periods in order to facilitate health or mobility needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency, and completion of a minimum of 12 semester units of course work in early childhood education or child development (excluding field work), including at least one course of at least three semester units in each of the following core areas:
Child/human growth and development
Child, family, and community, or child and family relations Programs/curriculum

Experience:
Six months paid or unpaid experience working with and/or caring for children from newborn to fifth grade.

Special:
Incumbents must apply for an Associate Teacher Permit through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing within the first six months of employment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires all paraprofessionals who provide instructional assistance in a classroom to possess a high-school diploma or General Education Development (GED) or equivalent AND ONE of the following:
• A minimum of 48 semester or 72 quarter units of college coursework.
• An Associate or higher degree from an accredited college or university.
• Pass an assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching, reading, writing and mathematics.

Experience:
One year of paid or volunteer experience within an educational or child care setting, preferably serving orthopedically/severely disabled students supplemented with Child Development Core Classes.

Special:
